In Daniel 6:3, the bible says:  ”Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him…”.

By way of recall, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego were young Jewish men, captured from Jerusalem and shipped to Babylon to serve in the palace of King Nebuchadnezzar.  They all had astounding physical and mental capabilities but the passage pointed out that Daniel distinguished himself above his colleagues, because an excellent spirit resided in him.  Without the spirit, he probably would have been like, or worse than them.  So, what is an excellent spirit and what does it do for people, you may wish to ask?

Well, it is a force or power that enables individuals to tower above their contemporaries.  It is usually a gift from God (James 1:17) and apart from Daniel and his friends, there are many people in the bible who had similar spirit in them.  They include Kings David and Solomon, the Prophets, Apostle Paul and the other Apostles and of course, Jesus Christ.  We do have such people in this age as well.

This Great Spirit does many special things for people, but for the purpose of this write-up, we shall consider the following only, using Daniel as our reference.

1.  It enables people to make sound decisions

Daniel opted out of defiling himself; that was a sound decision, ostensibly engineered by the excellent spirit in him.  On this, the bible says: ”But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself” (Daniel 1:8).  His decision later yielded a smashing result as he and his friends, turned out a lot better than their peers, which consumed exotic foods and wine from the King’s table (Daniel 1:18-20).

2.  It stands people out in a crowd

Daniel 1:17 says ”As for these four young men, God gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams”.  Their gifts, accentuated by the spirit of excellence, stood them out in the crowd and paved the way for them to serve the King (Proverbs 22:29).

3.  It positions people for promotion above their equals

The excellent spirit in Daniel, aided him to perform creditably such that, the king noticed and considered him for promotion above his equals.  Daniel 6:3 succinctly captured this fact as follows: ”Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm.

4.  It makes people to become very bold

Daniel became very bold because of the excellent spirit within him and he had no qualms in disobeying the King’s order that forbade everyone from petitioning any god or man for thirty days except himself.  And for this reason, he was thrown into the Lion’s den but guess what? God saved him (Daniel 6:6-22)!

5.  It gives people the opportunity to bless God

When the King noticed that Daniel was saved from the powerful jaws of the Lions, he blessed God saying:  ”26…He is the living God, And steadfast forever; His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed, And His dominion shall endure to the end.  27.  He delivers and rescues, And He works signs and wonders In heaven and on earth, Who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions” (Daniel 6:26-27).

Friend, it is apparent from all above, that if a person wishes to make sound decisions, stand out in a crowd, get promoted above his or her equals, become very bold and run his or her life to the extent that people will bless God through him or her, etc. then, he or she needs an excellent spirit to control him or her.  The good news is that, everyone can have it on request, if they are followers of Christ (Mathew 7:7).  Are you a follower of Christ? If you are not, please become one today i.e., be born again! And when this is settled, then you can confidently ask God for this wonderful spirit.  He’ll give it to you, and you’ll flourish beyond measure afterwards in Jesus name.  Amen.

Jesus is Lord!
