Recently, I read one daily devotional in which Genesis Chapters 18 and 21 featured prominently. And today, I will like to revisit some aspects of these passages. In Genesis 18, the Lord appeared to Abraham and he (Abraham) entertained him very well. As a result, God promised him that his wife Sarah, who was then barren, would give birth to a baby boy within one year. But she laughed in derision! Sarah laughed because she felt Abraham her husband, and herself were old, well advanced in age, and had passed the age of child bearing. She perceived God’s promise as unthinkable, and her action did not go down well with God.
However, God still went ahead to fulfil his promise in Genesis 21. He set all known and all time tested biological/physiological principles governing child bearing aside, so that Sarah, an old woman, could give birth to a baby boy called Isaac. It is on record that she laughed again but this time around, for joy.
Now let us go back a little bit. I presume many people would have done what Sarah did if they were in her shoes. For example, how do you think a woman who has no womb or who is very old or who has multiple/complex gynecological problems would react if she is told that she would soon have a baby? How do you think a person who has an incurable disease would react if he is told that he would be healed shortly; the position of Medical Sciences not withstanding? What about those who have been declared bankrupt, and are evidently not salvageable? How do you think they would react if someone informs them that their position would soon change when there is nothing on ground to support such viewpoint? We can go on and on ad-infinitum. Except they have absolute faith in God, they would simply laugh their heads off in derision as Sarah did.
Are you one of such people? Have you laughed in derision concerning God’s promise(s) for your life before? Have you concluded that God is incapable of doing much for you again? If your answer is in the affirmative, then I have good news for you; listen to it!
In Genesis Chapter 18:14, God whilst talking to Abraham said:
‘’ is there anything too hard for the lord? At the appointed time, I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son’’.
Today, I perceive the same Lord saying ‘’is there anything too hard for the lord? At the appointed time, I will return to you, my child reading this article, according to the time of life, and you will have whatever your heart desires’’. You can be very sure that he is willing and able to accommodate you in his plans (Isaiah 45:2-3). If you desire a child, he will give you one very soon. If you are ill, he will heal you. If you are finding it tough to make ends meet, he will bless you abundantly so that you can be a channel of blessing to others; if you are jobless, or if your present job is not commensurate with your level of training/education, be prepared for a more promising job. Are you confused? Then cheer up because God is ready to give you a sense of direction. Maybe you are surrounded by enemies; he will give you peace all around. Are you neck deep in debt or are you finding it tough to repay your mortgage? Is your marriage collapsing? Is your business or ministry in shambles? As a student are you finding it hard to pass prescribed examinations? And as a professional, are you finding it difficult to progress meaningfully? If your answer is yes then, calm down! God is ready to put everything right for you so that you can laugh for joy as Sarah did in Genesis Chapter 21.
However, you have a significant role to play in this matter. You have to seek the Lord diligently concerning your heart’s desire. If you seek him, you will find him, but if you forsake him I am afraid, he will forsake you too (2 Chronicles 15:2). Remember that ‘’he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him’’ (Hebrews 11:6).
Friend, you may have laughed in derision before concerning God’s promises for your life; that does not matter any longer! What matters now are that if you make up your mind to seek him, you will find him, and you will laugh joyfully at the end of the day. So shall it be in Jesus name. Amen.
Jesus is Lord!
