Psalm 91 verses, 1, 11 and 12 says:  (1). He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty… (11). For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways… (12). In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

Psalm 91 is a very popular biblical passage.  It is popular given that, it assures people of their safety/salvation in the Lord, among other reasons.  Specifically, its 11th and 12th verses, reminds us of the existence of some harmful, but unavoidable stones on our ways through life.  But the good news is that, the Angels of God are under strict instruction to protect us from being injured by them.

Before I go on, I will like us to look around the word ‘stones’, so that we can appreciate this write-up better.  The regular stones as we know are fragments of rocks.  They are hard in texture, and they appear in different shapes, sizes and colours.  They are very vital in the construction industry where they are used for foundation laying, land filling, flooring, wall building, drainage construction, etc.  Besides, they are widely used for decoration, building fire places, educational purposes and hunting.  However, countless of them lie fallow here and there and sometimes, they make movement somewhat restrictive, frustrating, and uninteresting.  They can also cause injury and death, if care is not taken.

There are figurative stones, or what I call ‘Stones of Life’ as well.  Some of them are mentioned in Psalm 91.  They include snare, pestilence, terror, arrow, plague and trouble.  They also include trials (tribulations, problems, difficulties, sufferings, etc.) arising from poverty, debt, unemployment, lack of meaningful assistance, destructive habits and evil company among others.  Like their regular counterparts, these ‘Stones’ are very essential for living (1 Peter 5:10, Romans 5:3-4).  However, they can be quite hard to handle and sometimes, they make living pretty restrictive, frustrating, and uninteresting.  They can also cause death therefore; we have got to deal with them firmly but sensibly.

So, how can we deal with them appropriately, you may wish to ask at this point? Well, we can do so, in many ways. For instance by:

1.  Simply ignoring them.

This attitude, no doubt, is unhelpful and wrong but many of us adopt it (Romans 7:15).  Meanwhile, the Devil is quite comfortable with it as it gives our ‘Stones of Life’ sufficient room to fester and consume us very quickly.  It is therefore our responsibility, to shake him off our backs vigorously and relentlessly (James 4:7).

2.  Confronting them without the help of God.

This is another wrong attitude, which we must resist robustly.  If for example, we succeed in shaking the Devil off our backs, he will only give us temporary relief then he will come back (Luke 4:13).  And when he does, he may encourage us to confront our ‘Stones of Life’ without the help of God, knowing fully well that we cannot achieve much in that way (John 15:5) and that, destruction will come to us very quickly.  But as I mentioned earlier, the Angels of God are on hand to frustrate his diabolical plans (Psalm 91:12).  Praise God!

3.  Confronting them with the help of God.

This is the best option open to us and all the bigwigs in the bible and in these days, used it to confront their ‘Stones of Life’ and triumphed over them.  King David was one of them!  It was even him who revealed from experience, that in truth, help comes from God.  In Psalm 121: 1-2, he said: ”I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? 2 My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth”.  God is still willing to help us overcome our ‘Stones of Life’ so that we can go on to excel in life.  He confirmed this position in Psalm 91:15 thus: ”He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honour him”.

Friend, as you can see, ‘Stones of Life’ are hard nuts to crack but they are very useful for living.  Nevertheless, God is willing to help us overcome their harmful effects if we allow Him.  But we have some roles to play before He does.  To start with, we must be born again i.e., we must have Jesus Christ on board our lives, as our personal Lord and Saviour.  Are you born again? If you are already, well done!  But if you are not, please invite Him by faith, to come into your life at once!  Next, we must ensure that we dwell in the secret place of God at all times.  This we can do by fasting and praying to God, praising Him ceaselessly, as well as studying, practising and confessing the scripture keenly.  We must also witness Christ to others with our lips and lives, etc.  If we play aforementioned roles very well, then God will assist us to overcome our ‘Stones of Life’ before long and our joy will be full.  So shall it be in Jesus name.  Amen.

Jesus is Lord!
