1. “Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” (Genesis 18:12)

2. “And Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me (Genesis 21:6)

I read a daily devotional recently in which Genesis chapters 18 and 21 featured prominently. I want to take a look at some aspects of both chapters in this write-up.

In Genesis 18, Abraham entertained the Lord very well, and in return, God promised him that Sarah, his wife, who was then barren, would give birth to a baby boy. She laughed in derision!

Sarah laughed because she couldn’t believe that she and her husband, who were both elderly, could have a child. Her action did not go down well with God! But He still went ahead to fulfill His promise in Genesis 21, and Sarah gave birth to Isaac, a baby boy. Then, she laughed again, this time for joy and in awe of God’s power.

Now, let us go back a little bit. I presume a lot of people would have behaved like Sarah if they were in her position. For example, how do you think an older woman who suffers from multiple complex gynecological problems would react if told her she would give birth to a child before the end of one year? Or how do you think a person who has an incurable disease and dying, would react if told he would be well in a bit, contrary to expert medical opinion?

What about those who have been declared hopelessly bankrupt? How do you think they would react if someone told them they would be financially solvent within a few days when nothing on the ground support such a viewpoint? ETC.

I believe they would laugh in derision like Sarah, except they have faith in God. Are you like the people I cited above? If you are, then I have good news for you! And that is, nothing is too hard for God to accomplish (Genesis 18:14). He is willing and able to accommodate you in His plans (Isaiah 45:2-3)!

He will give you children if you have none. Please, note that it is your right to have them (Psalm 127:3-5a). If you are ill, He will heal you (Jeremiah 33:6), and if you cannot make ends meet, He will provide enough for you to take care of yourself and do good work (2 Corinthians 9:8).

God will not withhold a good job from you (Psalm 84:11). Are you confused? Cheer up if you are, for He will soon give you direction (Psalms 32:8). Maybe you are surrounded by enemies; He will keep you in perfect peace if you trust Him (Isaiah 26:3). ETC.

But, you have a role to play in this matter. You have to seek God concerning your heart’s desire. If you seek Him, you will find Him (2 Chronicles 15:2a). Please, remember that “He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6).

You may have laughed in derision before because you did not believe God’s promises for your life; that does not matter anymore. What matters now is that He will grant you your heart’s desires, and you will laugh again for joy and in awe of His power, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Jesus is Lord!
